BAA staff and tenants to benefit from customised IP telephony training

2e2, a leading provider of mission-critical IT services, has been selected by BAA Airports Ltd to provide Internet Protocol (IP) telephony training to its staff and tenants in a number of its UK airports

10 December 2008, Newbury – 2e2, a leading provider of mission-critical IT services, has been selected by BAA Airports Ltd to provide Internet Protocol (IP) telephony training to its staff and tenants in a number of its UK airports, including Heathrow and three Scottish airports: Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Existing phone technology will be replaced by a single IP network infrastructure combining voice and data, providing a more supportable business service.

The training is one component of the overall project for which 2e2 will also be delivering the design, deployment, communications and support elements of the telephony estate refresh.

BAA’s environment posed some unique challenges for 2e2. The airport community is made up of airlines, government agencies, retail operations, airport handling agents and BAA staff. BAA provides and also sells telephony services to these organisations. As a result the training solution has to be tailored to embrace this diverse community.

To ensure users are able to use the new technology to its best advantage as soon as it is deployed, the 2e2 training programme has been customised to meet the exact design of the solution using a combination of training tools; user information sessions, online eHelp, floorwalking and collateral.

Expert users within each team act as product champions and are responsible for cascading training to their peers using 2e2 provided tools. The Expert users receive a user information session, from one of a pool of 2e2 trainers specially selected for this BAA project. Sessions are delivered using a self-contained mobile ‘Training in a Box’ IP telephony kit enabling training to take place anywhere, anytime and avoiding the need to rely on infrastructure.

The eHelp solution has been developed by 2e2 to underpin the project. It allows users to access on-demand learning using a highly interactive, modular and scenario-based IP telephony learning application. It is available on BAA’s intranet and extranet enabling users across all airports to access it.

Each area deployed to will have the benefit of onsite ‘floorwalkers’ being available on the day their area goes live, ensuring users are fully supported at every stage of the rollout.

In addition, 2e2 and BAA developed a range of collateral which users have access to, such as the deployment tag which is attached to every handset deployed and contains information on how to use standard functions on the handset.

Andrew Clarke, telecoms programme project manager, BAA said, “The deployment of IP telephony throughout our UK airports is a massive undertaking and the correct training on this technology for our users is vital to not only the success of the project, but to the operation of each airport. We felt that 2e2 could offer a comprehensive, tailored training plan that would touch as many people as possible through the implementation of a flexible programme, in what is a very logistically challenging and operationally-sensitive environment”.
